Welcoming a new baby into the world brings a lot of new emotions and feelings. It is important to remember that you and your husband are a team and you are in this wonderful journey of raising a child together. He is going to support you in any way that he can, and you should make sure he feels that same support.
First and foremost an important thing to remember is to always strive to have patience with yourself and with your husband. While you are learning and trying to get the hang of having a new baby at home, he is going through the same thing. Just sit back and enjoy watching him become a new father.
Second, don’t forget to communicate with him. A new baby will put a lot of stress on both of you as new parents, and will require most of your attention at first. Your husband is going to want to help you however he can, but he can’t read your mind. Be honest with him about how you are feeling and let him know how he can help you with specific things.
Third, it is important to give your husband opportunities to bond with his baby. While you will do most of the work with nursing and everyday care, he also needs to feel important! Let him change diapers, give the baby a bath, rock the baby to sleep, or help with tummy time activities.
Also remember to give him encouragement even when you feel like he doesn’t need it. As a woman, those motherly instincts sort of come naturally. For a new father, it might not be that easy. He might get frustrated when it comes to feeding or soothing the new baby. The positive things you say to him can really help him feel confident about his new role as a father.
Last but not least, it is important to remember to listen to his suggestions. It is his baby too after all. He will naturally have protective instincts and will always want what is best for you and for your baby. As you will nurture, he will provide and protect.
Adding a little one to your family is so special and will require effort from both of you to help make things go smoothly. There will be rough days ahead, but together you can accomplish anything!
